In the UK, what is a Tax Identification Number (TIN)?

accountinglads

A Tax Identification Number (TIN) in the UK is either a National Insurance Number (NINO) for employees or a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) for other types of taxpayers. Most individuals keep a NINO which HMRC relies on to monitor both income tax and social contributions. For both corporate businesses and self-employed people, the UTR is necessary for Self Assessment. The UK does not have a TIN, but the NINO or UTR is used to identify people in the tax system.
